Observed annually on February 27th, International Polar Bear Day aims to raise awareness for the challenges polar bears commonly face in the wild.
Due to ongoing sea ice loss, polar bears were listed as threatened in May of 2008 under the Endangered Species Act by the U.S. Department of the Interior, who claimed polar bears would become extinct by 2053 if nothing was done to combat the effects of global warming. In 2015, the IUCN Red List listed polar bears as "vulnerable" due to habitat loss and a dwindling population, citing only 20,000 to 25,000 left in the wild today. In addition to habitat loss, polar bears also face constant threats due to oil exploration, hunting, and toxic pollution.
With the year 2053 rapidly approaching and no end in sight to pollution and global warming, it's imperative that individuals take action to help ensure the survival of this wondrous species. Help polar bears by reducing your carbon footprint! Here are three ways you can minimize your environmental impact today:
1. Fight climate change by going vegan!
Animal agriculture is a major contributor to climate change due to the fact that the production of livestock is incredibly energy-intensive. Livestock require abundant amounts of water and grains and produce high levels of greenhouse gases! By reducing the amount of meat and dairy you consume, you can greatly minimize your environmental footprint.
2. Other ways to reduce your carbon footprint
Switch to energy-saving light bulbs; cut the lights when you're not in the room; unplug devices you aren't using; drive your car less; and eat locally!
3. Educate your friends and family
Be sure to inform your friends and family about the plight of the polar bears *and* ways they can help! You can also spread the word on social media!
