LA City Council Unanimously Passes Resolution Urging Nations to Stop Dog Meat

7.5.19On Wednesday, July 3, 2019, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a resolution urging the governments of China, Vietnam, S. Korea, Cambodia, and Indonesia to ban the sale of dog meat and to enforce their animal cruelty laws.

Introduced by Councilmember Bob Blumenfield and seconded by Councilmember David Ryu, the non-binding resolution aims to pressure governments worldwide to end their barbaric dog meat industrieswhich systematically breed, raise, torture, and slaughter millions of dogs for their meat each year.

The City Council resolution grew out of a resolution that was previously passed by Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils (VANC), which encompasses representatives from all of the San Fernando Valley's 34 Neighborhood Councils.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a similar resolution, H.Res.401, with the passage of the Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act (H.R. 6720), a bipartisan bill that amended the federal Animal Welfare Act to outlaw the consumption of dogs and cats in the United Statesa practice that, while uncommon, was still legal in 44 states.
